{ingredient} Superfood – Guava

Guava

Where they grow
Tropical and subtropical climates, particularly in Mexico, Brazil, and other countries in Central and South America but also in Thailand, the Caribbean, Hawaii (where my friend Justine tells me they are just everywhere!), Africa, and Florida

Details to note
There are other types of guava, but the most common, the apple guava, is the one which is pink on the inside and on the outside looks quite a lot like a pear (see the picture above).

Nutrition
Just 1 guava gives you SIX times the vitamin C you need for the day! Not to mention quite a lot of potassium, copper, iron, lots of vitamin A in the form of beta carotene, niacin, folic acid. Guava is mentioned as a superfood in many situations because it is such a powerhouse of nutrients.

How to eat
It can be eaten just like an apple, or diced for a lovely fruit salad with pears, strawberries, and some orange juice. Yum!

Notes from Eva
As I write this, I’m lucky enough to be here in Brazil munching on a guava fruit in the same way I would an apple! I actually did not know the English word for the GOIABA (pronounced goy-ah-bah) until I looked it up.

Just last week, I was at my friend Mariana’s house enjoying some time outdoors with friends when a Baiano (a lady from the state of Bahia) was kind enough to bring me to the neighbor’s house to see all the fruit. We picked some guavas, and I ate several of them as a snack.

I must tell you, they are INCREDIBLY tasty, so luscious with a soft texture but hard seeds that are edible.
