Maca RootMY INTRODUCTION TO MACA

I recall when I first went raw and had begun utilizing message boards to find more information about raw food. The number of jokes about maca, were astounding. Women would comment about their sex lives, feeling extra feisty with it, tricking their husbands into taking it. Maca has been compared to both Viagra and Ginseng.

I confess that I was intrigued and immediately bought some.

What I did not expect, is that it would have that old favorite flavor: malt! I went crazy making malted milkshakes, of course without malt or milk. What a brilliant exchange ~ trade something harmful for something which had all these crazy benefits ~ and tastes good.

That, my friends, to me, is what raw food is all about! Trade the “bad” stuff for the “good” stuff but feel like you’re still indulging. Brilliant.

WHAT IS MACA?

Maca is a root vegetable grown in high altitudes in Peru. When you buy raw maca powder, the root has been dehydrated at a low temperature and ground to a powder.

Maca is classified as an adaptogen, which would explain why it would be helpful at balancing hormones. Here is the current Wikipedia definition for adaptogens:

The term adaptogen is used by herbalists to refer to natural herb products which they believe increase the body’s resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety and fatigue. Adaptogens can also be called rejuvenating herbs, qi tonics, rasayanas, or restoratives. One specific characteristic of their action is that their effect is believed to help the body return to a balanced state.

DR. VIANA MULLER ON MACA FOR AN UNDERACTIVE THYROID

…When I began to study the impact of taking maca on several women who were having moderate to severe menopausal symptoms they began — without my asking them — to report that they had been able to reduce their thyroid medication or in a few cases even to stop it entirely after using maca for two or three months. And they all reported feeling so much better, much more energetic. In all these cases, the thyroid was underactive.

Dr. Muller’s clients have noted improvement, as a result of enjoying maca, with the following issues: menstrual cycles, Hashimoto’s Disease, underactive thyroid, energy, menopausal symptoms, adrenal function, and more.
